Akaroa is a French settlement (for a very short time!) on the inside of an ancient volcano. The entire area is referred to as the Banks Peninsula. We hiked up to Stony Bay Peak - overlooking the interior where Akaroa is located. One side of the volcano eroded to sea level making it a well sheltered port...
