Starting up the Greenstone Valley for 1 1/2 days, we then connected with the well known Routeburn Track. Most famous globally is the Milford Track, but local New Zealanders say the Routeburn is the best. The first full day of hiking was below treeline in the Rain Forest. It rained heavily all day. Moss, Ferns, Lichens grow everywhere:
The trail even went under the huge Earland Waterfall. Although it did not seem possible, we got even wetter! That night all the hikers were drying out clothes in the hut where we stayed - it looked like a college dorm room! The second full day was above tree line with spectacular views down the Hollyford Valley and out to the Tasman Sea. You can see lots more info at this link:
